I have Enough bill to pay! My sister has began feeling sorry for me. Paying for anything we do while we are out. Don't get me wrong, YAY I'm getting freebies, but her tone has changed to where i can here exactly how she feel...... SHE PITIES ME!!! What is wrong with me!! I Love Freebies when I'm employed... but this feeling....?

Haha! Yes Congrats to MEEEE!! :D

You know the saying.. they either don't come all or they all come at once!!

Since I've "widened" my Horizon and general prospects.... Things have actually began to work in my favor...

I've been getting calls ......loads of calls .....some of which are very Very Pointless, time wasting, good for nothing calls.... anyone knows why???
MEDIA FRIKKIN SALES!!

Its cool though as I've learnt to simply deal with it!

On the flip side I've stumbled across two potential jobs.. on in Job seeking industry (Me.. The jobless one. get hired and help others find a job.... a good idea?.. Just Kidding!!!) and a Bank Job...... don't know which bank yet... But were best to get paid from other than a place that supplies it!!

So keeping my option opened.

OMG this may mean no more Job hunting blogs left to write!! what am I gonna write about?

OK Officially PUT OFF (until further notice..)

Dreams DON'T always come true...lol!

SO plan B has come into play... Oh I didn't mention plan be... well i did but not directly..

STILL ......... Media sales........ Out the question! ! ! ! ! I maybe Cold person at times...... but Cold for a living? Me Nah Think so!

Why can't we all be like Hampshire County Council !?!?

my Hunting Continues...

So It is what it is
!

Being a recent graduate, I have come to accept the closest job to Journalism or media as a whole is MEDIA SALES! WTF!

Sorry but I am not one to be sucked in by that.

While studying I've work in retail and to be honest I'm DARN good at what I do! As far as Customer service and the gift of the gab! So why waste 6 years of retail experience. It would be a shame to ignore that and go into post-graduate slavery (also known as Cold Calling!!)

Since graduating I've been applying for jobs that work with my experience but being very picky about it.. so here is my criteria:
  • Pay above £20k
  • Hours 9-5 (ok or 9.30-5.30)
  • Non-retail...... I will go crazy if another person talks at me like I'm a undereducated woman with no goal.
  • Must work with JUST MEN!! (OK at least one man!) Women can be really hard to get along with.
  • Don't work weekends.. unless its my dream job (presenting on Radio again!!)
  • Min of 1 hour lunch... you'd be surprised to how many places just give 30 mins!! I should really report them!!
  • Located near a train station. I don't do buses
  • Get paid for overtime!!!! No Free working!! We live in London! please try and remember that!
Not too much of a fussy list.. I'm just asking for the basic.

I've decided to keep everyone updated with whats happening in the search for a POST GRAD job!!!

I have Quit my JOB!

Yes........ Quit it! Oh My gosh I cannot do retail anymore!! Seriously! Its just pure Slavery !

6 Years is just a little too long for me!!!

True I am a big girl but don't give me 8 boxes of stock EVERYDAY to unpack or shelf.... Plus do dirty hours (6am-2pm or 2pm-10pm)

30 Min Lunch.. If that!

I need a life!!

I need more time to find a job that pays an annual salary not an hourly one!

I just finished my degree! I did my degree for a reason...... right?!

I do NOT need to be in this RETAIL job!

It felt so amazing/Liberating quitting my job.. I left the building with a smile, knowing What I did was for the right reasons. It was like a fat kid lifted off my Shoulders! oh wee!
As everyone who reads my blog knows uni is over and I'm looking for a career/job.

Buuuut I think its essential to celebrate with my peeps 1st. So that's exactly what I did.....

The following day I was on a mission to apply to as many career related jobs as I could...

Only to be bombarded with all these recruitment companies trying to get me into media sales .. People just because the words MEDIA is in the job title doesn't fool me! Oh no! I know exactly what those jobs are about! I refuse to give in so soon!

So... I've added my name on to job mailing list with a few recruiting and broadcasting companies.

Now I'll just await the emails to come...... and continue applying!

Will keep ya'll posted.. (how Fun!!)

Yes ! Yes! Yes! For The Love of God/Allah ... FIKKIN YESS!!

My Degree is over and I have Graduated! I forced myself to attend the ceremony just so it sinks in!!
Never Thought I'd See that light at the end of the tunnel. I have witnessed the "light"

Finally I can look for that Dream Job... I mean it can't be THAT hard to find!
My Energy Levels are high and I just wanna go for it!

Wish me Luck people! Its gotta be done!!!

Ok I had to put a pic up to prove I have actually sat through my full three years!! (Almost gave up!)

Living foot loose and fancy free

So finally it's come to an end. The final student loan of the year is around the corner, but we all know that's going to be gone at the blink of an eye.

Going on holiday at your own expense might be considered impossible. However with much hunting online you can truly have a brilliant time even if you're broke.

Come Fly With Me

Budget:£150
No. Of People: 4
Nights: 4

Website: RyanAir.com
Destination: Venice, Italy

If you're after a short holiday with your mates as a well deserved rest, then flight tickets could be bought for as little as 1p to places like Venice and Tours Loire Valley, thanks to Ryanair.com.

Obviously you have to pay for the taxes etc, which still leaves you paying as little as £20 for a return ticket to some of the nicest cities in Europe.

The average hotel cost of four sharing would be £50 per night, which includes breakfast.

In total expect to pay an average of £73.46 person.

The Maths:
Flight: £20 for four nights
Hotel: £53.46 per night
Having a budget of £150, means you are left with £76.54 to spend on any additional transport from and to the hotel and dinner.

International Seas

Budget: £250
No. Of People: 4
Nights: 4

Website: Cheapticket.co.uk
Destination: Los Angeles, USA

If you have a little bit more than £150 saved up and want to travel outside of Europe, then cheapticket.co.uk is your best bet.

It is very simple. You chose the location and the date of travel and they compare all airlines for you, finding you the cheapest tickets.

Through Cheapticket.co.uk I found seven nights in Los Angeles for £85 on Northwest Airlines and KLM, which meant it would leave me with extra money for hotel.

If you don't have the patience to shop around then hotelclub.net is the best option to help narrow down your choices of cheap hotels in your holiday destination.

I managed to find very cheap hotel prices for a four star hotel located in Pico Rivera, £132 for four nights.

However, if you don't mind traveling to and from your hotel, the go for Goodnight Inn. It is most conveniently located in San Fernando Valley.

You will be saving a total of £30 on top of the additional £33 out of your budget, which leaves you more money to get gifts for friends and family… or a few drinks.!!

The Maths:
Flight: £85 for four nights
Hotel: £33 per night
Having a budget of £250, means you are left with £63 to spend on any additional transport from and to the hotel and dinner.

Around my Hometown

Budget: £100
No. Of People: 4
Nights:3

Destination: United Kingdom
So you don't have as much money as expected but still want to make the most of the money you do have. But lets face it, with a budget of £90 the likelihood is that you're not getting further than Scotland. But who said local is a bad thing?

Many of us don't really get to see parts of Britain, so this can be a brilliant place to start.

For transport nationalexpress.com is by FAR the best option. Locations like Perth, Edinburgh, Manchester and another 47 destinations are as little as £1 for a one way, so yes a return will be £2.

FunFare is a scheme that allows students to travel cheap. So if you don't mind a few extra hours on a bus with your iPod or a friend who has verbal diarrhoea, then it is definitely an offer to grab with both hands.

As for accommodation, the UK is known for its over-priced everything, so expect to pay around £90 for the full three nights.

However, it's work keeping up to date with the latest cost via cheaperthanhotels.co.uk. If you have a bit of dosh left over then do what most people do when visiting another city. Walk around with a map and a ticket for the tour guide bus.

The Maths:
Bus: £2 returns
Hotel: £44 per night (double room)
Having a budget of £100.

You are left with a potential £15, which means going to a fancy restaurant might be out the question, but we all know in any corner of the world a very welcoming McDonald can be found.

Renting. Know your rights

by Heba Keshk on 21st of February 2008

Moving out your parents' home and setting up your student pad may sound like fun.

But it isn't all plain sailing.

The property market is a jungle, with lots of snakes and predators waiting around every corner.

Tenancy agreements, deposits and loads of small print is the reality of this new student life, so don't let the excitement of having a new place distract you from knowing your rights.

Looking around

The best part of moving in with new flatmates is the house/flat hunting, as you get to see properties.

Some of them will be out of your league as some landlords will forget to tell you how much the rent is until after you and your mates got your hearts set on it.

Sometimes you will come across a repulsive looking house and question who in the world would live in such a state.

Signing your life away

Crunch time has arrived and you have to decide on a property.

It is greatly advised to read your tenancy agreement, i.e. your contract, thoroughly.

So even though you have the deposit in an envelope and so anxiously waiting on the keys to your place, know what you are getting yourself into. Read the small print ... PROPERLY!

Now you're in

Once you have moved in, immediately ask for an inventory and carefully look at each item in the house/flat and even take snapshots of all the rooms and walls.

These are they main things you will be penalised for once you move out, and if you know you didn't do it then don't pay for it. Use the images as evidence.

Sarah Mwangi, 21, journalist student explains: "There was a month left in a tenancy agreement. My landlord would not tell us that he arranged a viewing.

"One day I was listening to my music in my room and I opened my door to find three people in the front room taking pictures of the property."

Did you know?

Students who are renting privately could secure their six weeks' deposit by holding it in a Tenancy Protection Scheme.
Photograph by Rudolf Cech

This allows you to get your deposit back in full.

The rules state: "If the tenants have kept the property in good condition and paid the rent, and made sure that any other charges due under the tenancy are up to date, they will be able to get their deposit back".

The main reason the Tenancy Protection Scheme was introduced was due to many problems between tenants and landlords as students are more vulnerable in not getting their deposit back due to lack of knowledge of property renting.

The schemes offer a free service to assist in resolving disputes without taking it to court.

Now that you've signed on the dotted line, it's time to know what rights you have and what restrictions your landlord has.

Your landlord cannot turn up unexpectedly and especially uninvited. You are allowed to refuse his entry, as he has not given you a required notice of his visit.

Even if your rent is not paid on time your landlord cannot cut you off your utility supplies such as your gas, electricity and water, as they are essentials.

As much as the landlord doesn't want much complaint of noise in his property, he can never refuse or prevent you from having any friends or family visiting your rented property.

Landlords are not allowed to bully you out of the property you are renting by harassing you or changing the lock.

If you have signed a 12-month contract with a 6-month break, you can move out on the sixth month, providing you give three weeks notice.

So now that you have an idea of what to expect don't settle for less. Know your rights and stick to them.

Lectures

Most of us, especially in our first and second year of our course will attend at least two lectures a week, if not more.

And as much as Nando's seems more appealing then a one hour lecture, if you think about it, in the long run maybe lasting through a lecture is somewhat more beneficial.

The Facebook group, I pay 3,000/yr to listen to lecturers to read Powerpoint, now has accumulated 7000 members.

But how can the average hung over student survive this horrific ordeal.

Tips

Always arrive to lectures a little bit early, to give you a few minutes to catch up with your mates and time to get your final text messages out the way…otherwise you'll miss the intro due to lack of multi tasking skills.

Photographer Samantha Bruce

If you only have one lecture in a day with no other lessons, don't see it as a waste of time. It does not very proffesional, to sit blankly through a seminar.

Firstly you will get marked down and at the end of the year, you'll kicking yourself saying, "I should of just turned up to that lecture."

If your feeling zoned out or extremely bored out your brains, the least you can do is record the lecture so you can hear it back before the seminar and you can also refer back to it in the future.

If your loosing concentration and cannot keep up with the note taking and end up doodling, try and at least write the most vital information down even if its in bullet points! And don't forget the handouts.

Copying off your mate might seem like the easy option at the time. Then D-day arrives and you must start writing the 2,000 word essay.

But the notes you copied make no sense to you as each individual has their own style of writing that may only work with them. Do not risk it.

Buy a Dissertation Online

by Heba Keshk on 18th of February 2008

It has been revealed that numerous parents are willingly to pay hundreds and some even thousands of pounds to buy university essays for their children according to UKessays.

The essay company, UKEssays.com are stating that their student clientele, who buy their essays online, are using their parents' card details to pay for it.

Help or Control

"With the soaring cost and commercialisation of education, parents are becoming increasingly involved with the process and are determined to see qualifications for the cost," says Barclay Littlewood, owner of UKEssays.com.

When questioned why parents would pay for their children's essay to be written by a another person he carries on:

"The reasons we're seeing so many parents use our service is simple- universities around the country are providing students with poor resources and little contact time.

"So parents feel that the bonus is on them to provide their children with adequate resources and we are that resource."

Sounding like a resource or helping hand seems like an understatement as UKEssays.com match the word count you need: "Our researchers write to specified word counts, this is more to do with quantity and detail than anything else though.

"It ensures that our writers complete the work to satisfactory standards.Which means from the introduction to the conclusion, everything is written for the student."

It's refreshing to see that parents want to play a dynamic role in their child's prospect.

Then again, investing in a few essays won't give the student any sense of achievement nor a gain of knowledge.

Is it Plagiarism?

"UKEssays.com are the leading provider of research tools for students from a variety of subjects and standards," says Littlewood.

"We help students to focus their attention on the sources that matter. Put in simple terms, we are to journals and resources what Google is to the Internet - we collate all the important sources and siphon off the pointless and time-consuming material."

This website is created to allow students to buy essays online, the student gets to choose the topic and even advises UKEssays.com on how to reference their work, so it is in the style of the student's university or school, e.g. Harvard Referencing.

UKEssay.com also states that what they have to offer is legal.

They say: "You are simply buying a piece of copyrighted material from the author. It's just like buying a book, except you decide what's written."

Claire Bessa, head of the sociology department at Willaim Morris Academy, Hammersmith:

"I find the very idea of such an essay writing service as anti-educational. The service offered by UKessays.com is counter-productive as it offers an easy way to complete essential essays or dissertations.

"In using these essays students will not actually academically progress. The website is careful to point out that students cannot use these essays as their own work.

It states that students should not hand any work received in as their own work, however by providing the exact essays that a student needs they are giving them the opportunity to cheat. "

"Part of me would want to do it, but then again what's going to happen when I get a real job and I'm not capable of fulfilling the criteria? It's like cheating," says Danya Nimir, a Media and Culture studies student.

UKEssays.com states that coughing up £5,000 isn't a purchase but an investment, as it guarantees that the student will get a better job.

The Cost

UKEssays.com is not just targeted at university students. It also considers GCSE and A-level students, so prices vary from £34 for a typical 500 word GCSE outline answer to a monstrous £40,000 for a PhD essay.

It also varies on the time period of the delivery, next day, 3 days, one week etc.

Who buys these Essays?

1. Nottingham University - 363, making up 52% of our East Midlands customer base
2. Royal Holloway - 202, making up 28% of our London customer base
3. Oxford University - 180, making up 21% of our South East customer base
4. Durham University - 179, making up 34% of our North East customer base
5. Manchester University - 178, making up 29% of our North West customer base

UKEssays.com's most popular areas are law and humanities. This represents the issues in education. A law student is taught to pass exams not practice law, and humanities students by majority receive the lowest amounts of contact time.

"We're providing academic research material. There is no difference between academic journals and us. Providing that the student has referenced our work there is no chance of the student being penalised," says Littlewood.

Located in Mayfair, in the heart of London, Absolute Ice Bar is notorious for its all ice interior.

From the walls, to the seats, the tables and the drinking glass, everything is ice.

So coughing up £15 for admission to the venue for 40 minutes and a complimentary drink doesn't sound too bad at all!

The ice is transported especially from the Torne River in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden afterall.

However once you get to the venue, expect to wait an additional ten minutes at least for purchasing your tickets.

As you walk into the bar two men literately chuck a designer thermal cape with a hood over your head, without warning.

Leaving you with your coat and bag still on, so not much of a bar atmosphere.

Over priced

Once you finally get into the "Ice Bar", the staff flood in crowds at one go, so you'd anticipate the size of the room to be somewhat gigantic and the music to be pumping.

However to much dissatisfaction, you can walk around the perimeter of the room in 10 seconds and be back where you started. As for the music, it felt like you just entered a gallery!

You are given a ticket for your drinks, which all the choices consist of Vodka, minus the three options of fruit juice.

Once you get past the shock of the size of the venue, it is almost impossible to find a seat to experience the full ice atmosphere.

The only way it can be fun is if you make it enjoyable by taking plenty of pictures with your mates, otherwise you will leave the venue even more disappointed.

Ice Bar is over priced for 40 mintues of nothing. Only one ice sculpture could be seen and people walking around puzzled and confused due to much disappointment. Definitely a one-time experience, not worth doing again.

Young 19…

Known to most people as the next Amy Winehouse and can easily be mistaken as KT Tunstall (with similar dress code and style), Adele at a young age of 19 has, shot to stardom even before her album, ‘19’, was released.

With the new age of technology, Myspace has opened many opportunities for new artist like Adele, who gained fame through a growing fan base.

Born and bred in London, Adele Adkins newest single, chasing pavements was an instant hit and still standing at number two after three weeks of its release. The song is based about her and her ex “I had a $%*! boyfriend who I knew would be $%*!, and I knew when I started fancying him, let alone when I got with him it would be a ' car crash relationship ' ......that’s the crash bit in the video!”(taken from her Myspace)

Soulful…

Throughout the album you can hear a unique mature sound with a husky “croak” and soulfulness in Adele’s vocals which could reflect some of her inspirations such as Jill Scott and Bjork, like them, she has a unique way of rhyming and sounding. And similarly need minimal instruments to make each song strong.

Sounding similar to Kate Nash, with the same use of their British accent, some songs are not so easy to adjust to, however after hearing them a few times, you begin to appreciate the vocals as well as the lyrics.

Tracks that stood out due to its soulful approach are “day dreamer”, “melt my heart to stone”, in contrast “tired” and “cold shoulder” are catchy owed to the combination of the beat and her voice

The winner of this year’s Critics’ Choice at the Brit Awards is set for a long career as this album is only an immense opening to an interval of her recognition.

The room is getting fuller by the minute; a mixture of people all ready and in position to witness what is to be considered Europe’s biggest monthly urban showcase as yet.
The stage is in the centre of the room, the DJ could be seen in the right hand corner getting the crowd moving and warmed up for five hours of an unforgettable experience.
Suddenly the music fades and “Rap 6”, the host for the night, takes the stage and officially gets the crowds energy flowing….

What is the Jump Off?

Taken place in Astoria 2, Charing Cross Road, the Jump off is one of London’s Urban landmarks, a monthly event that has been running since 2003. It stages many forms of art (such as Urban Fashion, Street Dancing, Music and Freestyle rapping), this event combines different aspects of the Urban scene into one main event, all under one roof. Creating the definitive entertainment manifestation, the Jump Off also gives young accomplished artists a chance to express themselves, gain publicity and network with their peers and people in the industry.

The Jump Off began five years ago, when two brothers brainstormed ideas together and founded this event. University graduates and Directors of the Jump Off,, Harold, 34 and Ara 32, began this Urban Showcase for young adults to show off their talents and battle it out under one venue. The Jump Off brings together students and young adults who either want to take part in a challenge (to compete head to head at a chance to make extra cash) or simply want to have a memorable night out with their mates…

Like most young enterprises, the Jump Off was set up and funded by the typical use of loans and credit cards, the two siblings set out to start something that was yet to be made in the UK. Through much exposure the event is now supported by some of the Urban scenes biggest names such as MTV Base, KISS, Ecko and The Hook Up, which has resulted in greater publicity and further international support.

In 2005, the Art Council agreed to help fund the Jump Off due to its positive motive of helping young adults share their talents and aim higher, this is a breath of fresh air in contrast to all the on going street crime in this age group. “We awarded Jump Off a Lottery grant totalling £36,400 last year, towards the cost of organising 16 London music and dance events, and to help a number of UK artists travel to the USA to participate in the finals of key international rap, dance and freestyle competitions”. When I approached the Arts Council to question why they have chosen to invest in an up and coming event like the jump off their response was 'Jump Off TV is one of the UK's most proactive outlets for urban arts…We felt this was a unique opportunity to support London's emerging talent on the world stage, and for Jump Off to further develop their reputation as a platform for young people to enter into the music industry.'

Due to student’s “web wisdom” and the fast evolving new age technology Ara and Harold decided to take advantage of the cyber world as it has now become the most favoured channel of communication and entertainment by creating their own website, Jumpoff.tv, solely dedicated to keep their committed audience up to date with future events and to maintain the Jump Off experience by posting the best video clips of the previous shows. "Street Dancing is huge in the UK, but there aren't enough opportunities for dance crews to gain experience and exposure… we aim to leverage the broadcast capabilities of the Internet to bring the genre to a wider audience." says Ara, Director of Jump Off TV.

With all the success that has developed, Ara was placed in the Media Guardian ‘Ethnic Minority Powerlist’ and ranked at position 23 in April 2007.

Ugly Kids Club:
Mark (22) is better known under the alias of Mister Batlow (founder of Ugly Kids Club) and is currently studying Surface Design at the London College of Communications. He is well recognised for his overwhelming street art design. He even designed THAT wallpaper in the LCC Student Union Bar toilets.

He began as a regular at the Jump Off, as he loved what the Jump Off had to offer and its atmosphere. “I used to go to the Jump Off from back in the day it was a weekly event”. Ara, the founder of the Urban Showcase, Jump Off, has helped and guided Batlow from the start in the business aspect of it all.
“When I used to customise denim at Levis, I was 'headhunted' and approached by one of the Jumpoff.tv team who wanted me to take part in the event. Since then the founder of the Ugly Kids Club has worked alongside the Jump Off “I started designing tee-shirts for the Jump Off, which then escalated to me customising their Jumpsuits.” At The Urban Music Festival, Batlow got to design the Brake-dancing mat and their alternative logo for the Jump Off, which they are still currently using.

In January 2008 the Ugly Kids Club appeared at the Jump off with a new line of clothing, which attracted much attention, and since, hold a stool in the venue where they sell their pieces of clothing to the public as well as celebrities. “Having Mariah Carey come back for more hoodies was nice, winning a UK Urban Fashion award was great… these are one of my biggest achievements to date.”

Facts and Figures:

70% of the Jump Off fan base and crowd are students at college and universities worldwide.

Over 60% of Dancers and fashion designers who have appeared on the Jump off have been current students at various Universities across England.

Jumpoff.tv website has a top 30,000 Alexa ranking and is getting 180,000+ unique monthly visitors (60/40% male/female) with 600,000+ video clip views per month.

The Jump Off attracts 350,000-plus viral views a month of their video clips via MySpace, YouTube, Google Video, Live Digital, and Daily Motion. And it has 22,000-plus Jumpoff.tv email subscribers in addition to 6,500-plus mobile subscribers.

There has been over £20,000 in cash prize won in the UK and $50,000 worldwide since 2003.

What to Expect?

The Jump Off is a unique event as it is a cross between a night out and an Urban talent show, With a combination of Hip Hop and comical dialogue, the night is hosted by “Rap 6” along side Kiss FM DJ, Manny Norte playing the crowd some of the hottest Hip Hop beats

The event is packed with various segments and within each part there are new and raw talent, the age range is erratic, the crowd are very unpredictable, as they tell it how it is. If the crowd feel you lack in talent they will openly heckle you, so much confidence is needed, however once the heckling is over, people still admire and applaud you for having the courage to display your knack as the derision is merely humour.

So now that you know what atmosphere to expect, here are the segments to look forward to:
Dance Off: The competitors ranged from both genders from as young as 3 to 30 from all over Europe and parts of the world. The dance moves are not your average, they will certainly leave you breathless and the music shakes it up even more to perfectly sets the scene.
MC Battle: If you have ever seen the film 8mile you defiantly feel the same vibe as these fresh MCs battle it out to the finals to win an all paid trip to New York to compete there for big money using their raw material. However none to be taken serious as its nothing but good vibes throughout the segments, even when they are giving it their best at ‘’Yo Mama” jokes.
Fashion Show: Do you think you are the next best thing when it comes to fashion? And want to get your name out there? Then read one…this is not only aimed at professional designers but also aimed at up and coming artist such as LCC student, Mark Bajade aka Batlow whose started up his own line called The Ugly Kids Club and other designers such as “Stush”. The two easily contrast each other, which alone shows a variety.
Pillow Fight: This is part of the show where the ladies alone get a chance to pocket £50 for the last “woman” standing! Literally the last person standing without loosing balance/falling off a low levelled platform gets to go home that much richer, and considering the majority of the competitors are students, I can see why some will settle for £50!!
Eating Competitions: from delicious Krispy Creams to finger licking chicken eating battles… So if you raring for some competition and have room in your belly then this one is for you.
Photo shoot: An opportunity for all competitors and Celebes to take specialist snapshots.
This is also intended at the crowd, as they are encouraged to take the stage alone or with friends to take pictures as mementos.

The Ugly Kids Club

by Heba Keshk on 06th of February 2008

Mark Bajade lives a double, maybe even triple, life. By day he is a student. By night he designs his own fashion label and even finds the time to be a "rudeboy graffiti designer" inbetween.

Mark (22) is better known under the alias of Mister Batlow and is currently studying Surface Design at the London College of Communications.

He is well recognised for his overwhelming street art design. He even designed THAT wallpaper in the LCC Student Union Bar toilets.

The interview took place in a secluded room, where fine art students would draw nude models.

The Ugly Kids Club members describe themselves as "Beautification Specialists", customising anything from a bland pair of trainers to an old sweater.

Mark was dressed as if he was a walking advert for his brand, wearing a T-shirt (Ugly Kids Club of course), which he designed for UK rapper Skinnyman, and traffic-stopping Nike Air Force Ones.

What's Batlow all about?

A name can define who you are and what you represent and Mark's pseudonym couldn't be more revealing:

Batlow has the obvious relation to Batman. Like Batman I'm a hardworking insomniac, who takes his personal problems out on his work, ie. graffiti art."

"At the peak of my customising career my life was very much like that: no sleep, chain smoking cigarettes and late night trips to the chicken shop."

Where did it all start?

With the use of Myspace, Batlow gathered a group of people who wanted to volunteer and share their talent with youths:

"The Ugly Kids Club was initially a workshop to teach youths in both South and East London how to customise with graffiti."

"That somehow turned into an art collective. We began to collaborate together, spraying walls, doing fashion shows and other designs. But somehow it turned into a T-shirt brand."

"It started in 2006, but was 'grinding' since I was 17 years old. I wanted to do something productive for kids. We didn't have any funding to start off with and still have no funding. It was more about the kids and seeing how happy it made them."

Mark was first recognised at the age of 17, when he was visiting a Levi's store in central London and was stopped by the management because of his original style.

Since then he opened his own shop in Carnaby Street, called the The Workshop, and worked for Levi's, customising products. He also worked for an array of big brands such as Nike, DKNY and the Urban Music Festival.

The likes of R&B diva Mariah Carey have been seen wearing one of his stunning creations.

"By the end of that year we were awarded with the first UK Urban Fashion Award for Custom designer of The Year," says Mark.

Inspirations or random thought?

Mark, with the support of his family, began to import items of clothing and accessories from Asia, where he would customise and sell.

His biggest influences were respected designers as well as businessmen. He combined their ideas with his own. This resulted in his high level of success.

"Fashion design-wise, Wale Adeyemi and Mark Ecko have an influence on what I do, but the graffiti element Astek is one of many."

Ara, the founder of the Urban Showcase, Jump Off, has helped and guided him from the start in the business aspect of it all. Watch the video of his fashion show at the event in December 2007.

"I am the type of person to take random aspects from unrelated sources and use them as inspiration for all aspects of my business," adds Mark.

Advice for others

"It's cliche to say 'It's not what you know, its who you know' but its true. The more people you know, the bigger a network you have. And the bigger a network you have, the more potential customers you have."

"Also, having the thirst of wanting to achieve higher. I approach every new job that I get with the aim of bettering the last."

Jump Off Review

Located in the heart of London, The Jump Off takes place every first Monday of the month in Astoria 2, formally known as Meanfiddler.

If you’ve seen “8mile” and love the choreography of “Stomp the Yard” then Jump Off is the place to be. The night is filled with different segments from a fashion show, dance off to an MC battle, however not taken seriously, as there is nothing but good vibes from get go.
Doors opened at 8pm to the audience, where they watched and participated in a professional photo shoot.

The main show was scheduled to start at nine but like most live gigs there is a delay, but finally when it got started everyone was beginning to liven up and some even shook a leg.

With a combination of Hip Hop and comical dialogue, the night was hosted by “Rap 6” along side Kiss FM DJ, Manny Norte, with the help of Kimberly Jay, former presenter and Nike Athlete.

First off was the dance battle; the competitors ranged from both genders aged 3-30 from all over Europe and parts South Africa. The dance moves were breathtaking and the music perfectly set the scene.

A fashion show, shortly followed, by designer “Stush”, it consisted of two lines, one of which was lingerie and the other being ladies evening wear. The majority of the outfits were very flamboyant and were uniquely designed, which left most men with their jaws hanging trying to capture pictures with mobile phones.

The most exhilarating part of the night was the MC Battles and the stand-up segments as they both had jokes at other peoples expense and with much ad-libbing, not a single straight face could be seen in sight, “Laugh out Loud” humour is the best description for the two parts.

Definitely a “must go” event! It’s a good laugh, a brilliant atmosphere and unforgettable experience.

Tickets: £6 in advance/£10 at the door
Location: Astoria 2
Rating 4/5

Omarion and Bow Wow - Face Off

by Heba Keshk on 24th of January 2008

Omarion and Bow Wow first appeared together in their collaboration Let Me Hold You in 2005.

Three years later they finally did what both their fan bases have always wanted: a collaboration album.

Face Off brings the lyrics and vocals of the incredible Omarion of B2K, and Bow Wow formally known as Lil' Bow Wow. Both on one album, together on each track, surely this could not be more ideal.

It seems that the album tries to recuperate R. Kelly's and Jay-Z's Best of Both Worlds but how do they match up?

The album is full of chart toppers, such as their usual lovey dovey tracks such as Girlfriend and Baby Girl, which shows a mature side to the double act.

However their choices of words aren't exactly what you would call romantic:

"She's my girl but I wanna tip her/yeeah/And her body's built like a stripper."

Mature side to the double act

For the charts and club scene there are a few tracks that would work effortlessly as a club banger.

They are Hey Baby (Jump off), Number Ones and Another Girl.

Another potential hit that stands out is He ain't gotta know about me which is co-written by T-pain. T-pain also produced the beat as part of Nappy Boy Production.

T-Pain's distinctive sound has proven to be succesful in the charts and the track will prove to be catchier the more you hear of it.

The album is full of sound and fury. Each track is skilfully produced and some of the up-tempo tracks can put you in a trance but for the true fans of the two this by far is not the strongest material that they can bring to the "game".

Tracks to look out for:

He ain't gotta know about me

Over the last few decades, England, in particular London, has gone from being a dominantly Christian society to a more diverse and therefore a more tolerant society.

Recently, Michael Nazir-Ali, Bishop of Rochester, has aired his opinions on what he calls "no-go areas" for non-Muslims.

He commented in the Telegraph about how Muslims have begun to take over certain areas and as a result have made it "difficult to live or work there" if you are of a different race or religion.
London is more multicultural then ever..

The highest Muslim populated areas in London include Ealing, Newham and Tower Hamlet. According to research by the Guardian 10- 58.2 per cent live there.

"It is now less possible for Christianity to be the public faith in Britain," says Nazir-Ali.

It is evident that Nazir-Ali is concerned that the introduction of other faiths will result in Britain losing "confidence in the Christian vision" and culture.

Nevertheless this isn't solely related to different faiths. It has more to do with multiculturalism and secularism.

Current Britain

The current mentality of British families has changed with the rise of the country's secularism.

Many of today's parents do not raise their children on the values of the Christian faith. Instead, children are left to form their own opinions and judgments of what is right and wrong and what is morally accepted.

These morals are often based on social norms, peer pressure and media influence. According to Nazir-Ali other faiths - mainly Muslims and their creeds - are forcing Christianity towards extinction.

Buddhist monks in central London not an unusual sight anymore..

His article has been perceived as one-sided, intolerant and even discriminatory.

Inayat Bunglawala, assistant secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) says: "Bishop Nazir-Ali's remarks are quite frankly more like the kind of commentary we would have expected from the far-right BNP, not a responsible figure of the Church of England."

Secularism

London is known for its diversity and freedom of speech. This is evident through the public display of groups practicing and preaching their religions.

Some people can perceive this as a distraction from Christianity, yet Michael Nazir-Ali fails to mention this in his article and argument.

For example, members of the Hare Krishna passionately display their faith and try to entice passers-by towards their faith.

"Be a Winner not a Sinner"

In his article Nazir-Ali mentions the amplification of the Islamic calling for prayers (adan) as an unnecessary noise.

This can be compared to a Christian member of the public, Philip Howard, who was recently given an ASBO for harassing the public with his approach of preaching using "artificial amplification".

In some cases he would even single out individuals with verbal comments causing distress and humiliation.

Tolerance

Generally, it is an accepted fact that politics and religion are always going to be part of life.

Many people choose to use religion to control politics and create barriers in society, others choose to be tolerant of others and allow people from any background and religion to feel welcome in Britain.

Blaming faith groups creates unity amongst haters of those particular groups. It ultimately hinders our society, further segregates Britain and causes prejudice and intolerance.

Tolerance is the key to moving forward in Britain and creating real unity regardless of an individual's beliefs, culture and background.

As revolutionist Martin Luther King Jr, famously said: "We may have all come on different ships but we're in the same boat now."

ESSAYS AND DEADLINES

Okay, so we all have them and the majority of us at the beginning set out to get work done well in time for the deadline. However, realistically 90% of us who thought this, soon find themselves lost in day dreams.

We somehow delude ourselves that everything will fall into place but in the end you will be pulling an all-nighter to meet the deadline.

Yes, there is a sense of achievement but it is likely to affect the quality of your work.

Tips:

Some people don't know where to start. Plan out the essay and give yourself a rough word count for each topic/argument you are looking to cover.

Find a relevant key text. Don't spend hours on end reading a book you are struggling to get a quote out of. It's not the quantity but the quality.

DON'T forget to reference!!

Know your word limit and stick to it. Cutting out words may be a struggle, yet once you re-read your work you tend to see information that is repeated and therefore not needed.

Stick to the essentials. Don't spend too much time on descriptions and avoid repetition.

If you feel you have little time in your day to dedicate to your essay, use the public transport as a way to start.

When you're sitting on your train or bus the least you can do is jotting down a few sentences or even brainstorm about what you can potentially include in your work.

This is very useful, too, when you are actually starting your work. There is always information we forget under pressure.
Everyone knows the exact date of the arrival of their student loan. Many weeks before that you yearn for it.

You dream about how many outfits it can buy, the laptop you've always wanted or the concerts you meant to go to.

However, a month down the line you start questioning - 'how did I get this broke?'

Here's some advice on how you can stretch it out:

As soon as the loan and/or grant arrives make sure you check your statement and see how much you're working with.

Don't spend without delegating money to rent, overdrafts, bills and books.

If you do abuse your loan, the least you can do is make sure you buy most of your books ASAP. This way when it comes to researching and writing essays, you don't feel too tight spending up to £200 on books.

Because let's not fool ourselves; that IS the main reason why we even have a loan.

If you're renting accommodation pay rent in advance. It will set you back for a bit but if you're working, at the end of the month you know you got some money to look forward to.

Avoid shopping online, as all it takes is a click and it's purchased. Four pounds here, seven pounds there; it soon adds up.

When you're going out with friends, set yourself a limit in cash and leave your card to your student loan at home.

This limits you to spending excessively without realising.

Finally, don't fear checking your balance/statement every week. It's much better than risking your card getting declined and saves you the embarrassment and extra stress.

Make sure you're on track with every £££ you spend.
